Dan Heukrath  /  Principal, K-12 Studio Leader

For Dan Heukrath, architecture is as much about making history as it is about preserving it. His education designs articulate his poetic vision tempered by a down-to-earth sensibility that allows him to create beauty, excitement, and simplicity in each of his K-12 projects.

Dan draws on 20 years of educational design and theory to work with school districts on new construction and major renovations of existing schools. With each new project, Dan challenges his team, his clients, and himself to start from scratch. Casting aside limitations and assumptions prepares the way for a fresh look at solving design challenges and creating world-class learning environments.

Dan brings the discerning ear of a musician to each project. He believes that success starts with knowing how to ask school districts the right questions, listen to their answers, and involve them in the process. From there, he creates outstanding learning environments that balance programmatic requirements with strategies to maximize and conserve natural resources. Many of his designs include strategies designed to promote sustainability, so students learn to appreciate their impact on the built environment.

Dan studied engineering at Syracuse University before graduating from the Syracuse University School of Architecture.
