Calvin Ahn, Principal, and Susanne Angarano, Principal / Senior Interior Designer, co-presented “All Are Welcome Here: Transforming the Schine Student Center” at the 2022 ERAPPA Conference on Tuesday, September 20 at the Turning Stone Casino. Joining Calvin and Susanne for the presentation was Robert Hradsky, Vice President for the Student Experience and Dean of Students, Division of the Student Experience, at Syracuse University. Attendees learned how the nexus of principles of Universal Design, student-centered design, and planning for diversity, equity, and inclusion can increase student engagement while advancing a welcoming campus experience and how diversity and inclusion change the process of design and the design itself.

This interactive session demonstrated the entire arc of an aspirational leader – from the school level to the community level and beyond. The panel discussion with school leaders included Jeremy Belfield, Superintendent of Schools, LaFayette Central School District; Daniel Henner, Superintendent of Schools, Liverpool Central School District; and Douglas Lawrence, Deputy Superintendent, Liverpool Central School District.

The AIANYS Excelsior Awards program, celebrating its eighth year, highlights the best in publicly funded buildings, outdoor areas and public art across New York State and the professionals who support and advocate for them. Nine projects were recognized for an award in the categories of Renovation/Addition and New Construction. The Binghamton City School District Benjamin Franklin Elementary Ground Floor Renovation project was recipient for a 2022 Excelsior Award of Merit.
