Berkshire Family YMCA Child Care Center
A thoughtful renovation transformed a historic building into a unified early learning environment that expands access to high-quality childcare while preserving its architectural character.Located in downtown Pittsfield, MA, the Berkshire Family YMCA’s goal is to serve more families by growing their early education and out-of-school timed programs. Berkshire Family YMCA worked with our firm to rethink and redesign the interior space in their existing historic building. Working closely with Epsilon Associates to ensure historic tax credit applicability, we were tasked with maintaining much of the historic character and layout of the building while still providing high-quality childcare design.
Previously, the space was separated into various areas within the building. Our renovation expanded on the existing child care while also creating a unity between the childcare spaces, with a new entry/reception sequence bridging the zones. The renovations included ample natural light, a new STEAM room, an improved gross motor space, and new classrooms. The center has capacity for 140 children.
