Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Early Childhood Center Playscape
A former paved courtyard was transformed into a nature-based playscape that maximizes opportunities for sensory exploration, movement, and outdoor learning.Working with the Center's staff and Johns Hopkins University, our Landscape Department transformed a 2,400 SF outdoor play space for 24 infants and toddlers, replacing an existing landscape of rubber surfacing and concrete pavement with a nature-based environment.
Within the compact courtyard, a trike track encircles a sand play area with play counters, an interactive waterspout feeding a dry stream bed and play bridge, and a play hill with an embankment slide. Durable plantings, a hollowed natural log, musical elements, gardening boxes, and integrated trike storage maximize opportunities for play and exploration.
The transformed play space provides rich sensory experiences and encourages children to explore, discover, and engage with the natural environment.
