Sandwich Public Library Outdoor Space

Ashley McGraw Architects and David L. King Architects worked with the Sandwich Public Library to develop an ambitious program to re-imagine the library as a space that encourages community engagement and supports a broad variety of uses. The 17,700 SF project protects and reinforces the library’s historic fabric and its dedication to reading, archival research, and children’s learning while making the spaces more open and appealing.

The inclusive design process generated innovative ideas through collaboration with staff, the library board and patrons.

Our Landscape Studio designed a 1,000 SF new accessible entry that serves as the main entrance to the historic library. The new approach maintains the historic character of the building utilizing materials that reflect the historic building - granite slab steps, wrought iron handrails, and matching brick pavers for the accessible curved walkway through new plant beds with seasonally interesting plantings. We also worked with the local accessibility staff to modify the front doors in a way that achieved universal access without compromising the historic design.

Neglected for many years, we rejuvenated the 2,500 SF backyard patio space by repairing and replacing broken bluestone pavers, defining the parameters of the space with native plantings, and added an accessible walk. Today, the patio serves as an important extension of the library, supporting children’s story times, community gatherings, evening events, and quiet outdoor enjoyment.

The result is a flexible, future-ready space that reflects the library’s enduring commitment to community, learning, and inclusion. Through a collaborative and deeply contextual design process, this project demonstrates how thoughtful updates can breathe new life into cherished civic buildings—ensuring they continue to serve generations to come.
