SUNY Potsdam Childcare Center Playscape
Native plants, sensory gardens, and diverse outdoor play experiences transform the landscape into an extension of the classroom. The State University of New York (SUNY) Potsdam Childcare Center serves the families of University students, faculty, staff, and the community at large. The new 13,410 SF facility with ample natural light creates a bright and welcoming space for learning and play. With two large indoor spaces for motor skills and plenty of secure outdoor space, the design complements the Center’s emphasis on the positive development of emotional, social, intellectual, and physical abilities.
The outdoor playspace was designed as a nature-based environment that offers a variety of play experiences while encouraging children to explore native plants and connect with the natural landscape. The plant palette includes hardy native species, sensory-rich grasses and wildflowers, and a mix of shade and fruiting trees that support exploration, discovery, and outdoor learning.
