Three distinct nature-based learning zones encourage curiosity, environmental stewardship, and year-round exploration within a landscape inspired by the surrounding woodland.Located at the edge of historic Hort Woods, the 15,000 SF outdoor learning environment was designed to immerse children in nature through exploration, discovery, and sustainable design. Serving 170 children, the landscape extends the classroom outdoors, creating meaningful connections between the building, the woodland, and everyday learning.

Nature-based PlayThe 15,000 SF outdoor learning environment was designed as an extension of the adjacent Hort Woods, creating a seamless connection between the classroom and the natural landscape. Three distinct nature-based learning zones encourage children to explore, imagine, and discover through sensory-rich play and direct interaction with the environment.
Varied landforms, native plantings, and natural materials such as wood, stone, and sand provide opportunities for climbing, digging, building, and creative play. Spaces for quiet observation, artistic expression, and active movement allow children to engage with nature in ways that support their physical, cognitive, and social development throughout the seasons.

SustainabilityNative and adaptive plantings restore the woodland edge, strengthen biodiversity, and provide seasonal opportunities for observation and discovery. Carefully selected plant communities support local wildlife while reinforcing the site's connection to the surrounding forest.
Sustainability is woven into every aspect of the landscape. Rain gardens, rain chains, and a 6,000-gallon rainwater harvesting system capture and manage stormwater while making natural water cycles visible to children. Rather than remaining hidden infrastructure, these systems become part of the learning experience. Harvested rainwater is used to irrigate gardens and create temporary streams, giving children a hands-on understanding of environmental systems and fostering a lifelong appreciation for stewardship.
Together, these strategies contributed to the project's LEED Platinum certification, creating a landscape that not only supports healthy ecosystems but also demonstrates how sustainable design can become an active part of children's everyday learning.
