Chickahominy Indian Tribe

The Chickahominy Indian Tribe, with deep historical ties to their ancestral lands, originally settled in permanent villages along the Chickahominy River. In 1646, they were displaced, but they have since returned to the Chickahominy Ridge, only a few miles from one of their original village sites. Today, the tribe is comprised of over 850 enrolled members, the majority of whom reside within five miles of the tribal center, continuing to honor and preserve their rich cultural heritage.

We have been privileged to collaborate with the Chickahominy Tribe since 2023, engaging closely with the Tribal Council and program leaders. Our initial work included the development of a concept study for a 15,000 square feet early education center, 21,000 square feet administrative building, and the creation of a 100-year Master Plan for the tribe’s 14-acre site, which is currently undeveloped woodland. This site, located across from the tribal center, is characterized by four existing wetlands that contribute to its ecological and cultural significance. The 100-year Master Plan takes a holistic approach, considering the current needs of the tribe while planning for future growth and sustainability. It outlines the integration of key spaces such as the early education center, a cultural path, and a future administration building. The master plan emphasizes environmental engagement and connection to history, providing spaces for fishing, reflection, and cultural activities. It also ensures the site will accommodate the tribe’s long-term development while preserving its environmental and cultural values.

Current Phase: Construction Documents have been completed for the Early Education Center, which is designed to serve 100 children and features classrooms with direct outdoor access, as well as spaces that support STEAM learning and play. In parallel, the conceptual design for the Administration Building has also been completed, creating a central hub for tribal governance and community activities.

The Tribe is currently pursuing funding to advance the Early Education Center into the Construction Administration phase. This project represents a significant step toward realizing the Chickahominy Tribe’s vision for community development and cultural preservation, providing spaces that honor its heritage while supporting future generations.
