Advisement and Transition Office Renovations

An inviting advising center balances collaboration, privacy, and flexibility to better support the evolving needs of students and staff.

Located in the Memorial Library, the Advisement and Transition (A+T) Office is a primary interface and resource for most SUNY Cortland students’ efforts to achieve academic success. The office promotes student connection, engagement, and success throughout student’s academic journey and degree completion. The interior renovation transforms the tired and crowded office space into a vibrant and inviting resource for students. Promoting visibility and prominence of the space, the entry sequence, navigation to and throughout the space, and branding are key aspects of the suite’s transformation. A central hub to promote collaboration and interaction welcomes students to the space. Distributed support spaces, versatility of environments, and spatial zoning enable the staff to best conduct their programs and support the SUNY Cortland students.

The project’s guiding principles were:

  • Highlight A+T as a vital resource for students (easy identification & navigation)

  • Accommodate the varied activities and programming of A+T through a balance of privacy, openness, functionality, and collaboration.

  • Enable the A+T staff to best support the Cortland students with compassion, knowledge, and resourcefulness.

  • Be student-centered: welcoming all students to come in and interact with the services available to them, empowering them to be successful and build the capacity to function on their own.
