Early Learning & Community Center. Epiphany School
Founded in 1997, Epiphany provides educational opportunities for children of economically-disadvantaged families in Boston, combining strong academics with personal support.
The new building houses a child care program, with space for school-aged children after-school programs and office space to support Epiphany’s mission on the second level. Apartments for teaching fellows are also included in the new center.
The 12,150 SF outdoor play space was designed for the 65 infants, toddlers, and preschoolers in two separate play areas. The infant toddler play area includes a sand play rea and embankment slide, with a trike track and a covered space for outdoor play in not-so-perfect weather. The outdoor space for the preschooler includes a trike track winding around a large play hill with embankment slides, climbing logs and a sloped play net, a sand play area and an area for music and seating areas for group gathering, and a large natural lawn space for open playing.
A greenhouse provides support for the school’s extensive gardening program, and also serves as a lush and green meeting space for students and staff. The school also planted the raingarden with native perennials that invite butterflies and birds to the garden.
